The 28th Annual Lake of the Ozarks Shootout is Coming This August
It's nearly time again for one of the most popular annual events in the area. The Lake of the Ozarks Shootout and all of the events surrounding it will be taking place August 14-28, 2016. Bridal Cave & Thunder Mountain Park gathered a little bit of history and information right here for you.
1988 was the first year for the Lake Rescue Shootout. The Osage Beach, Sunrise Beach, and Lake Ozark fire departments were a part of this boat race that let local boaters find out who was the fastest. It grew little by little each year, and in 1995 the name was changed to Caleco's Shooter's 21 Benefit Shootout.
A year later in 1996, the Gravois & Mid-County Fire Districts joined the Shootout. The name went through another change in 1997 to the Lake Rescue Shoootout with 80 boats competing for the title of the fastest boat at the lake.
This event's 20th anniversary was celebrated in 2008 at its new location, Captain Ron's Bar & Grill. The original location, Shooters 21, was demolished the day after the previous year's Shootout, staying open just long enough to host one more annual boat race.
In 2010, since the interest in this event increased more and more each year and the amount of money raised kept growing, the Shootout was enlarged to include an entire week's worth of activities. Some of these were a Meet & Greet with the drivers, a treasure hunt, mini- Shootout, fireworks, and concerts.
Today, the Shootout is the largest unsanctioned boat race in the Midwest with over 100 racers and 100,000 spectators! Enough funds are raised every year to benefit not only the 8 lake area rescue teams, but many other local charitable organizations too. Last year's final total topped $175,000! There are tons of events happening all week long that are fun for the entire family.
